Bal & Pat Nash

Mission Statement

The scholarship honors the lifelong contributions of Pat & Bal Nash Sr as emergency medical first responders and providing healthcare assistance to the Poland community. This scholarship is to offer a graduating senior from Poland Regional High School who lives in Poland, Maine, a scholarship to continue their education in emergency first responder or healthcare fields.

Their Contributions

W Ballard Nash Sr was one of the original members of the Poland Fire Department in 1967. He was Chief of both the Fire and Rescue Departments from 1975 through 1977.  He became the first Emergency Medical Technician in the Town of Poland and, along with his wife, Pat, taught many EMT and Crash Injury courses. He was also an instructor for the Maine Safety Council, teaching first aid. Mr. Nash was a member of the Poland School Committee, Poland Planning Board, Poland Community Club, and a Poland Historical Society life member. He was also a correspondent and on the board of directors of the Poland News Flash.  He became a Tyrian Lodge #73 AF&AM member in 1964 and was a Master in 1970. He was honored as Mason of the Year in 1993. In 1990 he was awarded the Sabbathday Lake Grange Community Service Award. In 1994 the American Legion Post 150 in Mechanic Falls awarded him Citizen of the Year.  In 1995, he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from the Lions Club. 


Patricia A Nash was beloved for her continued dedication, time, and talent to make Poland a better community.  She serviced the community of Poland in many capacities.  She was an original member of the Poland Rescue.  Her community leadership positions included being the Health Officer for over forty years; dispatcher for fourteen years; a member of the Board of Selectmen for nine years; and rescue chief for eight years.  In addition, her community participation included being a board member of many committees, including Advisory, Recreation Land Use; Budget, Charter Study, Zoning Update, Municipal Building Study, Old School House Restoration, Emergency Services Study, and Comprehensive Planning.  The Poland Spring Preservation Society Board of Directors appointed her as Honorary Director for her unwavering support of their mission.  She was also president of Life Springs, a group of volunteers who provide services to the elderly.
